My Little Helpers

One of the benefits and not-so benefits to having your fourth child is that you have a lot of little helpers. And I mean a lot. My kids LOVE to help. For Myles this meant getting Parx at five days old out of the bassinet while I was showering two feet away and taking him to the chair where he could rock him. I'm serious. I hadn't showered in what seemed like days. I had Parx asleep (finally!) "safetly" in the bassinet that I had in the doorway to the bathroom so I could still see him. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough. It must have been during the few seconds I closed my eyes to wash shampoo out that Myles reached into the bassinet and took him out and carried him into the other room. Sierra screamed, "Mom! Myles has the baby!" I looked at the bassinet to see it empty and a feeling of sheer horror overcame me. I ran stark naked and dripping wet through the house (thank goodness I hadn't opened the blinds yet) only to find Myles sitting in the rocking chair holding and rocking Parx with the biggest smile. It was hard to get mad at him because he was so proud of himself, but to this day I don't know how he did it without seriously injuring Parx. Myles isn't even as tall as the bassinet. We're lucky, that's all I can say. And I can tell you that I now have Parx all the way in the room with me with the door locked while I shower. And thank goodness that babies with siblings come to Earth more resilient.

When it comes to Sierra's help, she loves to love him. She snuggles him, "plays" with him, hugs him, talks to him, and pretty much smothers him to death. She really doesn't quite get that he can't do everything she can do. Just this morning she was showing him how to make a snowman picture with tissues. Pretty cute. I will say her baby talk is pretty hilarious to listen to.

Mekinley is Parx's second mom. If she had it her way she would be his first mom. She LOVES him. And Parx loves her. She loves to take care of him and never tires of him. And she's really good at it. I remember as a new mom becoming a little flustered when Mekinley would scream. But not Mekinley. When Parx is upset she just holds him and comforts him until he settles down. And he always does. We call her the baby whisperer. She loves this name. She doesn't even hesitate in changing his diaper. When she's around she'll barely let me do anything. Sometimes this frustrates me and she gets in trouble for taking care of Parx when she's supposed to be doing other things, but one thing is for sure--she's going to be a great mom some day. And for all of you in need of a babysitter, give her a few more years and she's yours!
